History

In 1968, Howard Hughes, having seen the Warm Springs area during a test flight, purchased the entire Warm Springs Ranch.

In 1978, 2 years after the death of Howard Hughes, the Warm Springs Ranch was purchased by the L.D.S. Church. After a couple of years, the cattle operation started to decline, and the church planted fruit and nut trees, hoping to develop the ranch as a welfare farm. The experimental welfare farm was unsuccessful, so they sold all but 75 acres to other entities. The remaining acreage , which is now called Warm Springs Recreational Ranch, was subsequently developed into a unique recreational area for members of the Church. Included are many camp sites plus two large swimming pools. The Ranch hosts numerous large and small family and group outings, using ground water pumped from a private well to support the grassy fields and campgrounds. Service missionary couples were called to maintain it.

Warms Springs experienced a fire on July 1, 2010. The facilities suffered extensive damage. Miraculously, no guests had scheduled to use the facilities that day. Only two missionaries, Grant and Marcia Watkins, were on the property at the time of the fire and were quickly and safely evacuated after valiant attempts to fight the fire.

The facilities were reopened in June 2017 and are now under the management of the Las Vegas Nevada Tule Springs Stake.

  1. I grew up in Moapa Valley, Nevada in the 40s and 50s. No one in the valley had a swimming pool at that time (not even the high school), and our favorite place to swim was Warm Springs. I just found your web site on my computer and I am so happy to see that the lower pool is pretty much as it was those many years ago. The culinary water in the Valley was very hard, and whenever my family or friends went up to Warm Springs to swim, we took our shampoo so we could wash our hair in the naturally-soft water of the spring! We used to climb up on the hill above the pool (as shown in your photo), drop down through the hole you can see at the top, and jump off the lower part of the cliff into the pool.

  2. Wasn't there an intermediate owner named Taylor somewhere in the history of this ranch? Or did Taylor own it before Hughes?

    1. What's the status of Warm Springs? Is it ever going to be reopened? We had a wonderful girls camp there days before it burned down.

  6. The Church is planning to re-open Warm Springs, but must be waiting for permits from Clark County. I have been unable to see any construction from the highway. The gate is locked and there are "no trespassing" signs on all the fences. Will update whenever I am able to obtain current information.

  7. I have wonderful memories of the Warm Springs area. While the 75 acre LDS complex was used mostly by other LDS members for girls camps, father and sons outings, etc. Many non-LDS were also able to enjoy the facility and the beauty of the area. It is a gem worth protecting and rebuilding. I hope the property is not sold and is eventually, hopefully soon, rebuilt to what was there before so many others can have the experiences that I have had.

  8. Is there any updates about The reconstruction of the Warm Springs Facility? I hope, for the sake of the younger generation, that the Warm Springs will open again soon and become available for them. I have such great memories of overnight camping, swimming, giant palms and the fish and turtles the were in the steams. I hope these kids will be able to experience what I was able too.

  11. I have a question. Is it really under reconstruction? Is it still in the hands of
the Mormon church? Or does the government now own it? Like every free running body od water in the Moapa Valley? Bowman's reservoir, The waterplant at warm springs.
The Dept. of Fish and wildlife closed it to swimming. And doesn't the govt. now have control and designated most of the Mormon property a wildlife refuge and park?
Too bad we wont get answers.
